Add Amazon to the list of retailers boycotting Beyonce’s visual album. To be fair, the e-retail site is only semi-boycotting King Bey’s platinum fifth LP. Beyonce released her self-titled new album a little more than a week ago, with no prior marketing and exclusively on iTunes. The 14 track “visual” album, complete with 17 accompanying videos for each track plus three bonus tracks, was reportedly only sold digitally on iTunes to prevent leaks and any gossip on Beyonce’s big surprise.

Drake — and Kevin Hart — might be on the new VIBE winter cover, but Drizzy also made headlines this week with his discreet and PG diss of Kendrick Lamar on DJ Esco’s “Sh!t” remix. Oh, will it ever stop? In other less dramatic news, Beyonce sold a million copies of her visual album (as she should), while Chris Brown got his probation denied and R. Beyonce definitely broke down barriers and created a whole set of #newrules, slaying her way into the platinum club. Wyclef is known for working with various artists like Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, and Lil’ Wayne just to name a few. Not a stranger with working with Beyonce, as he featured on Destiny’s Child’s single ‘No, No. No’ back in 1998, VIBE caught up with Wyclef to asks him his take on King Bey’s release of her self titled album. “I love the way that Beyonce released her album once again, says Wyclef.
Long the best-kept secret in R&B, Jhené Aiko finally escaped the world of mixtapes and hip-hop features in late 2013 when her exquisite Sail Out EP rode a wave of critical acclaim all the way to number eight on the Billboard Hot 200 — no easy feat for a debut set without a radio hit. She’s grateful for the EP’s success but that’s not her end goal. “[Music] is something I’m going to do regardless of the benefits I reap from it. Because I love doing it, it keeps me doing it no matter how successful,” says the 25-year-old. “I really stay motivated by people that come up to me and they tell me how much they’re connected to a song.” And it’s hard for listeners not to feel attached to the singer after hearing the frank, emotionally raw tracks on Sail Out
Beyoncé has been mobbin’ on the low for the past year to create what is now her best work Beyoncé . The self-titled visual LP that crept into iTunes at midnight on Friday (Dec. 13) served up some good good in the form of 14 new tracks and 17 music videos, including the super sexy Vicky Secret ad-esque flick “Rocket.” The Miguel-penned track shows Bey at her natural pin-up girl finest, equipped with bare curves and herself defying gravity like Inception on a bed (above). Now that the album has been consumed by upwards of 800k of us human beings (that number shattered a record on iTunes , btw), little details about her creative process have been slipping out
The stats keep rolling in for Beyonce‘s blockbuster fifth LP with news that the stealth release is already the 24th highest-selling album of 2013 — after just three days. Selling 617,000 copies on iTunes between Friday and Sunday, the visual extravaganza has already outsold Kanye West‘s Yeezus (the year’s 25th best-seller with 607,000 copies sold). In other King B news, Apple is reporting that Beyonce passed the one million mark on iTunes internationally at 11:15am PST this morning (December 18). It now holds the record as the music retailer’s fastest selling album of all time.
Whilst Beyonce’s fifth solo LP continues to blare through our office speakers, let’s take a closer look at the supporting players that help make this project complete. While close confidantes of King Bey make video cameos (Jay Z, Kelly Rowland, Solange, etc), it’s one voice that people can’t stop talking about. The raucous “Flawless” is not only an ode to Beyonce’s Texas hometown, but a call to women everywhere to strip themselves of society’s expectations and embrace a feminist lifestyle. The combination of those angsty visuals and Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche’s words about gender in relation to marriage and a career not only make for a powerful message, but a desire to learn more about the women speaking them. The melody “XO,” written by The-Dream and Ryan Tedder, will be the follow-up single later in the New Year
